After moving around from place to place because of my husband's military career, we finally found ourselves in the same city with not one, but TWO relatives! My sister and her husband (both military) were stationed at bases nearby. My cousin's husband's job was moved to the area due to a closure in their home city. A scenario that we couldn't have created on our own ended up happening without much influence by us. We had family in the same area code! Hooray! But we found that we weren't seeing each other as much as we had hoped because "life" got in the way and we were all busy tending to immediate family events.

After my sister and her husband transferred to the other coast, we were reduced to two families in the area. My cousin and I decided we had to make a concerted effort to stay connected. We both like cooking, eating and visiting, so the "Second Saturday" concept was born. We get together on the second Saturday of each month for dinner and fun. Oh, and did I mention we always cook something we've never made before? Yeah. That. The good news is we've had very few "duds" and always look forward to trying something new each time we get together.
We've been doing this for 2 years now and it's been a hit! Sometimes we invite neighbors. Sometimes we have out of town guests. Sometimes we put a LOT of effort into the evening. Sometimes we sit back and relax. But. The memories are starting to run together. And we can't remember what we did to make something a success, or what we would have tweaked to change it next time. So we're going to put it all out there on the internet so we can remember and so others can share vicariously through the blog if they can't attend in person.
Happy eating!
